A close family friend was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about 15 years ago. As you may know, pancreatic cancer is almost always terminal because it’s difficult to to diagnose in early stages. When my friend was diagnosed, she was given the option of surgery with chemo and radiation, but even with that aggressive treatment, had a prognosis of 3–6 months. She looked into alternative therapies and found an enzyme replacement therapy combined with special diet restrictions. She decided that since she was terminal either way, she did not want to spend her last months recovering from an invasive and traumatic surgery and dealing with the awful side effects that come with chemo and radiation. Her insurance would not cover the enzyme therapy because it was too experimental, but fortunately she was in a financial position that allowed her to pay out of pocket. While she did succumb to the disease, she lived for almost 3 years after her diagnosis. Those months were a gift for her and for her family. She felt relatively good for most of that time, and was able to have a normal quality of life until the last month. For the last month, she went into traditional palliative care to alleviate the pain. While I don’t normally advocate for holistic treatments over western medicine, this situation is different in that western medicine doesn’t actually have a good treatment option for pancreatic cancer. It was certainly the best outcome for my friend; she was able to spend time with her husband, daughter, and grandson that she otherwise would not have had.

In April 2021, I had a mammogram. A sonogram. Then a biopsy. All on the same day. Which was kind of convenient because I started the morning, having nothing wrong with me, then ended the day knowing I had breast cancer, but not a really scary one and certainly not likely to end my life any time soon. When you get diagnosed with cancer, you spend a lot of time seeing people. Radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, genetic people and other cancer patients. I’ve never wanted to waste a moment of my life worrying and I didn’t start then. In fact, while waiting for my surgery I gave some thought to the girls. I was going to have only one girl, after the mastectomy. I was losing the left breast. So I named the remaining girl Nip. The missing one became Nope. One of my older sisters would get perturbed when I made jokes.
