EDIT II: I have been flamed by some Vietnamese on Quora for my answer, but I stand by everything I wrote. While I welcome disagreements, I expect them to be done with respect and intellect, sans sarcasm and ridicule. I’ve taken the time to write a what I believe is a thorough, well-balanced answer and if you are going to comment, you should at least do the same. While I consider myself an American as well, my Vietnamese identity is very close to my heart and I don’t consider myself any less of a valid resource on things Vietnamese. In fact, I consider myself in ways a much more impartial and reliable resource as I am better able to keep an open mind, unfettered by overzealous modern-day nationalism, propaganda, and politics. I will not delve into how I feel about modern China and its politics and policies and how they affect Vietnam in the present day as it’s irrelevant to the question at hand. Conversely, some Vietnamese people are incapable of rising above their own ignorance, arrogance, and hatred and this impedes them from recognizing the reality of our history as a people. Some aspects of Chinese language and culture are so deeply ingrained into Vietnamese culture that many Vietnamese are completely unaware of its origins. This is understandable and acceptable. What is not acceptable is how some of these said Quorans blatantly reject how the history and culture of Ancient China directly influenced Vietnam even though the history and the data support it. In fact, I think it would be much more difficult to prove the converse of what I’m saying, that Vietnam is NOT a part of the Sinosphere given its history and its present realities. Frankly, I think the diversity of Vietnam is what makes us such an adaptable group of people who continue to thrive in spite of all the immense adversity we have faced throughout our history and I celebrate this aspect of our people. We adopt what works for us, make it our own, then we move on. And we will continue to do so in spite of the ignorance of a few.

While I am not the only person capable of using Google, some Quorans don’t bother using it because they opt to believe what they want to, and the truth is if you don’t want to believe something, it doesn’t matter what the data support and how many links are provided. Nevertheless, for those who are genuinely interested, here is a link to National Geographic’s Genographic project indicating the genetic origins and diversity of Vietnamese people (Kinh). It’s clear that modern Vietnamese are a blending of (North)East and Southeast Asians: Here are links estimating the contribution of Chinese language to the Vietnamese lexicon. If you speak Vietnamese, the contribution becomes glaringly apparent when you study, say, Cantonese or another Sino-influenced language such as Korean or Japanese. You start to notice all the similarities in vocabulary thanks to the common thread of Chinese:
